KIDS IN CONCERT NEWS
Our first camp session is almost over and it’s shaping up to be a very memorable week for everyone involved.
I’m both exhausted and exhilarated! The positive, creative energy going into this program seems to more than double as it comes out in these beautiful children’s performances.
About 35 kids between the ages of 5 and 16 join together each morning and afternoon to play and sing with kic’s incredibly talented faculty: Laura Milleson, Tina Guldhammer Frei and Will Frei. Their theme for the week is “Find Your Voice.”
Witnessing this experience is akin to watching a metamorphosis take place from one end of the week to the other. One day there was some considerable hesitation as kids tested the waters of this thing called improv. Could they really trust themselves to sing “All you need is Love” in front of their buddies? Would they be teased by their friends for volunteering to act out the sound effects of a spy story? Could they risk looking really silly? As one 11 year old boy revealed, “What if someone from my school walks by and sees me doing this?!” Nothing inspires more than seeing a child fearful to speak raise her hand and offer to participate in an improv game. Or watching a 7 year old boy go from blurting out inappropriate noises during a song at the beginning of the week, to singing with all his heart (and eyes closed), “Don’t worry if you’re good enough for anyone else to hear, just sing, sing a song.”
Throughout the week they learn about encouragement, harmony, listening, and practice, all building toward a concert on Friday when parents and friends are invited to a performance featuring the hard work and fun of all who participated. I’m so excited to see them all shine in that performance for their families!
You are invited to join us all at the Club at 5pm tomorrow, Friday, April 1 to celebrate the children in their performance!
KIC thanks the dedicated and fantastically energetic staff of the Club for their generous support. We can’t wait for summer to do it all over again!
Below are some pictures we’ve taken of the fun this week:
